Anyone interested in space combat games ?

Postby The Sea Peoples » Sat Jun 21, 2014 6:46 pm

I have read a little bit about upcoming space combat games Star Citizen and Elite dangerous, both sound pretty cool. Wondering if any kiwisim gamers are following these games ?

I'm following star citizen,I wouldn't say closely, but am interested in the sandbox aspect. It is a great premise and I think it will be done well. The updates I have seen have been positive but I am waiting for release and peer review before pulling the trigger .

Haven't really done any research into elite as yet so can't really say comment on it. I have read comments on other forums about it that have been positive though

I've been playing both in their current versions.

Star Citizen is the more polished of the two but seems to me like it's going to end up much like Eve.
Elite Dangerous seems closer to completion, but the only way to make money in the current Beta version is to go to PvP areas in your grossly underpowered starter ship and hope you get lucky about 20x until you can raise enough bounty to start upgrading. That said if they offer a viable alternative to your starting situation I feel it will be better of the two.

I was thinking about grabbing some screenies of them and writing up something a bit more indepth, I will do if I find the time this weekend

I'm quietly playing the Elite Premium Beta.

It's amazing and an exercise in utter frustration all in one.

Right now E:D is a really an Alpha test despite what they say. There's not all that much of the game in place and what's there is really a tech demo/network stress test to try to get their networking system together. It will crash **repeatedly**, it will stall as it tries to find you an instance on someone's PC with crappy internet as you fly from A to B. You will encounter griefers and there's little in the way of real documentation. Bad things will happen when you try to dock, undock, buy stuff etc etc.

But...... in between all of that is an absolutely amazing game slowly but steadily coming together. I'm confident they'll deliver, and am eagerly looking forward to "Beta" (ahem) 2.

They will. I believe they'll offer a bunch of starting roles/configs depending upon your planned initial career.

I guess I will ry out star citizen for no other reason than oculus rift support. I used to play the early wing commanders so quite like the ides of sitting in the cockpit this time around with the rift :)

E:D has Rift support already and seems to result in "WOW!" reactions all round.

Have to say I'm really enjoying Elite now I'm past the grinding stage. It certainly seems to be the more 'simmy' of the two, and I've got some real high hopes for it now.

We should look at getting a kiwisim group together when it becomes possible.

I really enjoyed the game when it first came out on the ZX Spectrum, so if it ever drops to a reasonable price I will be keen.

I'm grinding still and have had my ups and downs. I got to $43K the other night, before I accidentally dropped all my cargo. Was going for "up arrow" to tweak my power and bumped the "end" key. Argh!!!! $24K dumped and lost and other pilots swooped in and scored my freebies. I was PISSED. Made it up again last night but that's one way to make life difficult for oneself.

Needless to say I have now unmapped the end key!

Also got interdicted in the Anarchy system with nearly all my cash in cargo and came within seconds of being destroyed before I could super cruise out. Usually they appear behind, but this time they were all at my 10 o'clock - all four of them. If I'd gotten destroyed then I would have been right back to zero. Doubt I'd have restarted for weeks if that'd happened.

Yes I read all about not putting all your money into cargo but I was so keen to recover my losses that well you know...

We should look at getting a kiwisim group together when it becomes possible.

Agreed. I gather comms will be in the upcoming Beta release at the end of the month so fingers crossed it's also the team play stuff. Apparently it's going to be a big release. I'm hoping it's more of the game rather than a bunch of separate test systems bolted together for intensive testing which is how things feel at present.

I got a big help the other night when I left a station after logging in and found dozens of p cell containers floating about. Someone took a bath but I got 3 loads of 4 containers loaded before anyone else showed up.

Just made the Cobra Mk3... wow nice ship. I really appreciate how each ship has a different sound-scape, as I'm a sucker for great audio in a game.

Of course I'm worried about losing my progress if they wipe everything for the upcoming Beta release at the end of the month. But you know what... maybe I'm not so worried. I don't want to be burnt out on the game before they have a chance to add the rest of the missing gameplay - of which I feel there's a load still missing.

Just got my first player kill

I was heading into Chango Station when I saw a player in a Hauler being attacked by a Sidewinder. The Sidewinder had a wanted status so I dove in like the Calvary, got onto his tail and smoked him. I'm not sure he even realised what was happening. The Hauler pilot did though because I formed up beside him in the best escorting fighter fashion, we shared a few wing waggles and flashing lights then I tailed him all the way to port.

I got a couple of thousand for the bounty and I'm sure a thanks or two from Commander Engman
