I've been eyeing F117 but I have this horrible feeling my boundless nostalgia for that game will leave me bitterly disappointed.

It's certainly a risk -- I'm sure some happy memories really are best left as memories. I took this opportunity to grab it because I never played it back in the day, so I've got nothing to lose :)

I certainly pays to shop around.

There's a bit of a rumble going on with the steam sale with assertions of some title prices going up just before the sale to make discounts look better. Not sure how true it is.

GTA5 is a providing an example of that, Agent.

The price for GTA5 on Steam has hovered at $90 pre-sale. Then for the Steam sale the front page shows the price as $117 discounted by 25% to $87.
When you click through it becomes a little clearer, as you can either buy a non-discounted GTA5 for $92, or buy the discounted GTA5 packages that have it bundled with other titles (GTA4 or ingame GTA5 money or Max Payne, etc).
Yes, you're ultimately getting more value for the discounted packages but they way it presents in Steam is not doing Rockstar any favours.

I haven't followed any other titles so don't know they're in a similar boat but it wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah I saw something on reddit where a couple of game makers disputed the allegations of price manipulation, but the GTAV case certainly sounds dodgy.
