Be careful R2, we're kind on the forum, perhaps not so kind in the air.

I'm a little more 'stuffy' or historical in my approach to aircraft skins.

I whipped this one up for you for the Mediterranean RN Martlet if you want it, just pm me an addy to send the tweaked version too.

Ive got a stack of Photoshop templates for The Flying Kiwis for all sorts of aircraft, most are no real problem to add new pilots to, so once I have your addy Ill send them over bit by bit, if you want the same Squadron skins as the other guys have for the likes of a few Spitfire models, P40's, Tempests, P51's, p47 and I cant remember what else but there is stacks

Its just trying to balance the time between map building and skinning, especially with a baby only a couple of weeks away...

Did you get that revised R2D2 Illustration I sent through DA? I also included a noseart file, but not sure if it worked or not... ran out of time to test it sorry

I did R33gz, but haven't had a proper chance to look at them. going from going to work at 1330, to a "nice" 5am, back to 1330 has kinda screwed me over rofl.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see what I can create *evil scientist laugh*

WIP

Postby Dark_Apostle2.0 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 9:44 pm

After a jaunt on Inspire against Gille and ilikepie the other night, before my ethernet card's program crashed and burned on me, I was tusseling with pie's G2 in a Yak-1B. This is a plane I have a soft spot for, which is unusual because Im not really a fan of russian aircraft for some reason.

So i d/l'd one of Vpmedia's Yak ace skins and took the 'nm' template and began my hack n slash. Basically using gimp i sectioned the stars from the marked version and stuck them on mine, then went to work on a small nose art, raided the regiment folder for a squad marking andused an online Text translator for my russian. The TFK I discovered is macedonian so I'll need to fix that :hmm:

If anyone knows of or has a Yak-1b skin with better weathering and exhaust marks lemme know plz?

I give you Dark's Yak:

Needs more work but i dont know what, might make the text larger, but I cant seem to get it like us see on the ingame aces skins and such. Anyone know a way around that?

I downloaded a text this week called "Soviet" because I thought it might look good on the Russian skins. Has the backwards R's etc like russian text.
I just put it into the text folder in windows and it comes up in Gimp.

Let me know if you want it and I'll send it too you.

maybe some more definition on the wolfs head, it seems to merge with the paint scheme a little too well. just my thoughts ;)

Maybe a glowing bright red bloodshot eye and white teeth with saliva dripping from them  .

Also how do you create the weathered paint effect on the skins without having to colour every pixel individually?

I haven't used gimp for a while so I can't remember what brushes it has if any.
In PS Elements, I use Faux Finish Brushes, Rolled Rag Cotton in Mode Clear, obviously pixels and Opacity will depend on your needs.
Just play around with the brushes and see what you come up with. I'll check my other comp to see if I still have gimp on it and have a play around.

Winger69 has a 1b template at flying legends with its own weathering set
Its actually a really nice template you might want to look at it for doing the skins.

Ive had a bity of success with using rusted/brushed metal textures and use layer masks to hide/show any exposed/scratched paint. Works well in photoshop... not sure about gimp as Ive never used it.

Also just using texture layers with layer effects, anything from opacity to actually to the actual layer effects will'dirty' the skins up a bit... kinda takes the 'shine' off them if you what I mean :D
