KiwiSim Simulation Screenshot Competition #1

Postby Agent X20 » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:23 am

Listen up KiwiSimmers, it's time for a screenshot competition!

Please read the following details carefully.

We're looking for the screenshot that best captures the thrill or essence of "simulations". What is it about these simulations that so captures our collective interest and imaginations? Can you convey that in just one image from your favourite simulation?

We're putting up a copy of the documentary "U-Boat War" on DVD and a copy of Silent Hunter III for the winning shot. Details of the prizes are listed in the following post.

Post your best screenshot from a simulation along with a caption. The caption is important and must be included. Use your caption to describe the moment or add a little colour to the events unfolding. Prefix your caption with your name so we can easily tell who posted what entry.

Instructions on posting your screenshot follow. Entries will can be found here.

This competition is open to everyone but only NZ residents may claim the prize. Of course you'll need to be a registered KiwiSim member to post your competition entries.

The competition closes on the 16th of July 2005, and will be judged by Agent X20 (me) and grover. The judges are always right, and no arguments or debates will be entered into and the judges' decisions are final.

Screenshot edits are not allowed outside of cosmetic image sharpening type effects and so forth. Any images that we suspect have been tampered with will be disqualified at the judges' discretion. This is to level the playing field so that folks other than the local Photoshop gurus stand a chance!

Screens up to 1600x1200 are allowed. Uncompressed images ie raw BMPs will not be accepted and owing to the excessive bandwidth requirements may be deleted. JPG and GIF images are recommended.

We appreciate that not everyone has cutting edge video cards that can run super high anti-aliasing. The judges will give equal consideration to non FSAA shots. Remember it's about the action, the energy and that simulation "buzz". We ran a similar competiton a year ago at the Gameplanet forums and the winning shot did not feature FSAA!

Enter as many times as you like although someone posting dozens of entries will not be looked kindly upon by the judges, so we suggest no more than half a dozen tops.

We will be operating a fairly liberal interpretation of what constitutes a simulation - but RTSs, plain FPS shooters and RPGs will not be considered. Basically anything that gets discussed in this forum is fair game.

Go to it!

The U-Boat War

A decade of secret rebuilding had brought forth capital ships like the Bismarck, the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen, names to strike fear into any Allied seafarer. However, it was from under the water that the biggest threat was to come. Commanded by Admiral Karl Donitz, the submarines laid waste to shipping, cutting supply lines and striking from within convoys where Allied escorts dare not use guns. "They were the only thing that really frightened me". So said by Winston Churchill.

Silent Hunter III

Command the cunning and deadly U-boats of the North Atlantic and experience the tension-filled atmosphere of a WWII submarine movie. The King of submarine simulations returns with an all new 3D game engine, new crew command features and more realistic action than ever before. The game includes a career campaign, patrols that have both fictional and historical missions, a mission editor and multiplayer feature. Whether it is stalking convoys or dodging depth charges, players will experience their own personal war story. The spectacular graphics, multiplayer options, and suspenseful gameplay combine to create the most impressive submarine simulation ever.

Submitting your entry

Postby Agent X20 » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:24 am

Please upload your entries into the KiwiSim Screenshot Competition gallery.

Once there, click the "add photos" option in the drop-down box on the top right. Browse to each of your respective entry pictures and be sure to enter your caption! You can upload one at a time or multiple.

The Gallery will add new entries at the start of the gallery. A thumbnail will automatically be generated. It will most likely also generate an intermediate 640x480 version when you click in (I have trouble turning this off). so you may need to click again to see the full size version.

If you would like to like to feature your image here in this thread it's pretty easy. Drill right down to the full size version of your image in the Gallery and right-click and select "copy image location". Then post a reply here and add an img tag pair.

Code: Select all
[img] ... [/img]

Paste your copied image link between these two tags, so it looks something like:

Code: Select all

That's it. If you have any questions please PM me!

We've got six entries so far.

Come on the rest of you, get cracking. Time is running out. Heck, even if you've already got a copy of SH3 (in which case you should want the doco!) we still want to see an entry from you!
